SAT and ACT

Standardized testing scores are a major factor in college admissions decisions. Most colleges will accept the two primary standardized tests, the SAT and the ACT. The College Board also offers specific subject tests called SAT IIs.

SAT

The SAT is a three-hour exam designed to test for general readiness for college-level work.  It includes three categories:  mathematics, verbal, and writing.  It traditionally has focused less on technical knowledge of the subjects and more on reasoning.  Register by mail or at www.collegeboard.org.*

The primary SAT testing areas are:

Mathematics

• Algebra I
• Algebra II
• Geometry

Verbal

• Vocabulary
• Reading comprehension
• Basic literary terms

Writing

• Grammar
• Usage
• Proper essay structure

ACT

The ACT is a five-hour exam that tests knowledge in various subject matters including English, mathematics, reading, and science, as well as an optional essay portion.  Register by mail or at www.act.org.*

The primary ACT testing areas are:

English

• Grammar
• Usage
• Punctuation
• Sentence structure
• Rhetorical skills

Mathematics

• Algebra I
• Algebra II
• Geometry
• Trigonometry

Reading

• Comprehension
• Basic analysis of passages

Science

• Interpreting data representations
• Interpreting research summaries
• Analyzing conflicting viewpoints

Writing

• Proper essay structure
• Writing skills

*If registering for Sunday testing instead of Saturday, you must register by mail the first time, and you should get an appropriate letter from the rabbi or headmaster.  For future tests, you can register online for additional tests.
